Unlocking the Power of Data: How Democratization Fuels Collaboration and Inspiration

Published by Tom Rasku on

Data democratization aims to make data accessible to non-specialists without compromising security, and the call to achieve it has captured the attention of the data analytics community for more than a decade. Growing interest in this goal aligns with the surge in “self-service” analytics and stems from widespread recognition of a critical business challenge: the need to adopt data-driven decision-making is often at odds with the considerable unease many employees and business users feel when interacting with data and data software.

Many organizations have attempted to overcome this by hiring lots of technical leaders or adding additional software solutions.  They’ve tried with lectures, mandatory training, puppet shows, and calls to action.  They know a cultural shift towards embracing data as a collaborative and integral part of business decision-making is needed, but they’re uncertain how to achieve it.

Demystifying data and promoting a more inclusive approach are definitely helpful, but they haven’t been a magic bullet.  While the Data Analytics community’s conventional wisdom tells us “It’s the culture, not the technology”, the inability of employees to meet expectations using the available software options says differently.

There’s not much people won’t do to be successful at work.  If their bosses are saying “We want you to use data to make decisions,” most employees want to do just that.  Unfortunately, the tools they are given to engage with data aren’t intuitive or empowering to them. They don’t produce something we at Liquify call “data confidence”; the feeling that understanding data and gaining insights from it is fun and within reach.

When people try to learn something complex, like how to work with data, it feels difficult to achieve a sense of flow.  They may be motivated to continue because learning to analyze data is an important goal of theirs, but for most employees, working with data isn’t, in and of itself, the most important goal.  Their most important goal may be selling flowers, creating an inviting  produce display, healing patients, or drilling for oil.  If data can help them, wonderful.  But they’ll only engage with it if doing so is intuitive enough not to take them away from their most important professional goals.
